The stone runs a deep glassy cherry-red at its centre, deepening into near-black, mottled patches toward the crown cut and shaped from a single piece, nothing set into it.
It was hand-polished with a chamois cloth, the same way every piece leaves this bench there's no setting to hide behind, so the shaping has to be right the first time.
It's around forty million years old and it will never feel cold against your finger. That's the part nobody believes until they've worn it.
This depth of cherry only came out of one small part of the parcel, and when it's gone I have no way of getting more.
Real amber floats in salt water. Almost nothing else does.
Most of what's sold as amber online is plastic, glass, or pressed — real amber scrap melted down and fused back together, sold at the price of the real thing. All of it is heavier than water. Amber barely is.
You'll notice two more things the moment you open the parcel. It's warm — a stone should feel cold and this one never does. And it weighs almost nothing.
One caveat: silver is heavier than amber, so a set piece sits lower. Drop in a loose bead if you want a clean answer.

Amber is soft. Around two on the hardness scale — softer than almost anything else in a jewellery box. That's not a flaw, it's how you know it's forty million years of tree resin and not glass.
So the whole of it comes down to this: keep it away from anything harsher than you are.
Wear it, though. Amber warms against skin and takes on a deeper shine over years of contact — the pieces that look best are the ones nobody put away. My own pendant has been on since I was nine.

How It's Made
Most amber sold today is pressed — scrap heated until it softens and forced into a mould, which is why the beads all come out matching. Heat ruins this stone. So I work it cold and wet, by hand.
Every piece starts held up to the window. What's inside decides what it becomes — a fracture, a cloud, something ancient caught in it. I cut around those, never through them.
Then five or six grits of wet sandpaper, each finer than the last. The water keeps the stone cold and carries the dust away. No machine does this better than a thumb.
Coated amber shines like plastic because it may as well be. No lacquer, no resin, nothing sprayed on. The gloss comes from a cloth and enough patience to keep going.
Last, each strand is threaded and knotted stone by stone so one break never loses the lot — or a single piece gets set into sterling silver. Then it goes in the box.

Warm water and a quick rinse won't hurt it. Chlorine and salt water will.
Both will dull the polish over time, and unlike copper this stone doesn't age gracefully into a patina — it just goes cloudy on the surface. If you swim in it, rinse it in fresh water afterwards and pat it dry.
Honestly, the easiest thing is to take it off. It's a thirty-second job and it's the difference between ten years and forty.
