I forget I have it on

“I have a whole drawer of bracelets I never wear because they're heavy and they catch on everything I do. This one weighs nothing at all. I put it on the morning it arrived and only noticed at bedtime that I still had it on. Three months later and it hasn't come off except to shower.”

Made for my skin

“Half the stones I try just look washed out on me, and plain silver on its own can fall completely flat. This is the opposite. The honey against deep skin is stunning and it actually glows. I wore the necklace and the ring to my niece's wedding and three women asked me where I'd found them.”

The first that looks like my mother's

“My mother wore amber my entire childhood and I have been looking for years to replace it. Everything online had that flat orange plastic look to it. These have real cloudiness inside them and every single bead is a different shape, exactly like hers were. I put the necklace on and my daughter went quiet.”

I tested it before I believed her

“I have been burned twice buying amber online, so I ran the salt water test at my kitchen sink the same night it arrived. Seven spoons of salt, dropped a bead straight in, and it sat right there on the surface. My husband came over to look. First time I have ever proved my own jewellery was real.”

Nobody else has this one

“It does not look like the photograph, and that turned out to be the entire point. Mine has a fracture running right through it that catches the light when I move my hand. I bought it as a gift and then ordered a second one for myself the same week. The only ring people actually ask me about.”

Frequently asked questions

I've bought amber before and it turned out to be fake. Why would this be different?

Because you don't have to take my word for it.

Most "amber" sold online is plastic, or pressed — real amber scrap melted down and forced into a mould, which is why the beads all come out matching. It's sold at the price of the real thing and there's usually nothing to check it against.

Every piece I make is genuine amber, cut from rough stone. And it can be tested in your own kitchen the day it arrives — real amber floats in salt water, plastic sinks.

If a piece of mine sinks, keep it and I'll refund you in full.

How do I know if it's real amber?

Real amber floats in salt water. Almost nothing else does.

  1. Stir seven spoons of salt into a cup of warm water
  2. Drop the stone in
  3. If it sinks, it isn't amber
  4. If it floats, you're holding the real thing

One caveat: silver is heavier than amber, so a set piece sits lower. Drop in a loose bead if you want a clean answer.

How do I look after it?

Amber is soft — around two on the hardness scale. Keep it away from anything harsher than you are.

  • Take it off before perfume, hairspray and hand cream — alcohol and solvents dull the surface
  • Warm water and a soft cloth, nothing else. No jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner
  • Store it on its own, not loose with rings and chains that will scratch it
  • Keep it out of long, hot sun

Wear it, though. Amber takes on a deeper shine over years against skin. My own pendant has been on since I was nine.

Can I wear it in the shower, or swimming?

Warm water and a quick rinse won't hurt it. Chlorine and salt water will.

Both will dull the polish over time, and unlike copper this stone doesn't age gracefully into a patina — it just goes cloudy on the surface. If you swim in it, rinse it in fresh water afterwards and pat it dry.

Honestly, the easiest thing is to take it off. It's a thirty-second job and it's the difference between ten years and forty.

Why is it this cheap if it's real?

I bought the rough decades ago, at decades-ago prices.

I've been buying from the same family for forty years and they no longer sell to small buyers. What's in my drawers is the last of it, and I'd rather it went to people who'll wear it than sat in a drawer waiting for me to get a better price.

When a colour runs out, I have no way of getting more.

Will it look like the photograph?

No — and that's the point.

Every stone has its own fractures, cloudiness and colour. A perfectly matched set is the surest sign it isn't amber at all. Yours will be its own.
